How to Choose the Right Surface Drive System for Your Vessel: A Complete Buyer's Guide

Choosing the wrong surface drive system is an expensive mistake. The wrong model will underperform at speed, overload the drivetrain, or create installation geometry problems requiring costly custom fabrication. This guide walks you through every factor that matters — so you get it right the first time.

 Identify Your Hull Type

The single most important factor is your transom angle. TSD surface drives are divided into two families based on this:

BG Series — 45° Transom AngleDesigned for deep-V hulls. This is the standard geometry on sport fishing boats, offshore patrol craft, and offshore racing vessels in the 8–20 metre range. If your vessel has a sharp-entry bow and a narrow V-shaped bottom, start with the BG series.

BH Series — 10–13° Transom AngleDesigned for flat-bottom and semi-V hulls. Common on river patrol craft, customs enforcement boats, and coastal transport vessels. These hulls sit flatter on the water at speed and are optimised for shallow-draft operation.

Match Engine Power to Drive Model

Every TSD model has a defined maximum input power rating. The complete range:

Model Power Range Vessel Weight
BG550 / BH450 60–200HP Up to 5T
BH500 / BH550 / BG600 150–300HP 4–10T
BH600 / BG660 250–500HP 6–20T
BH750 / BG750 350–600HP 10–40T
BH850 / BG850 600–1,060HP 13–80T
BH1000+ 1,000–1,500HP+ Custom

Define Your Speed Target

Surface drives deliver their greatest advantage above 35 knots. Below this speed, the efficiency benefit over conventional propellers narrows. Before selecting your model, confirm your vessel's target speed and ensure engine power is sufficient on your hull.

Rule of thumb: For every 10% increase in vessel displacement above the drive model's rated weight range, expect approximately 3–5 knots reduction in top speed at equivalent engine power.

Consider Your Operating Environment

Shallow water operators — river patrol, coastal customs, beach-landing craft — should always select BH series for the low installation angle and minimal underwater appendage depth of 150–200mm at planing speed.

Tropical seawater operators — high salinity above 35 PPT, temperatures above 35°C — should confirm their maintenance schedule includes oil seal replacement every 1,000 hours. TSD's duplex stainless steel (2205 grade) propeller blades are rated for continuous operation in these conditions.

Single or Twin Engine?

  • Below 6T: Single drive installation is typically sufficient

  • 6–20T: Twin drives provide redundancy and improved manoeuvrability

  • Above 20T: Quad-engine configurations using BG750 or BG850 are standard in naval and commercial fleet applications
